Diagnosis and treatment of swine flu

Swine flu is on the rise in many parts of the world, though not on a rapid scale. The spread has been controlled by appropriate health education and other measures. In spite of this, there are chances of the spread of the infection.

The possibility of swine flu virus infection in patients with fever and respiratory symptoms should be considered if
§ The person has traveled to an area where human cases of swine fever have been identified.
This includes all the countries that have had any number of affected people. Especially North America, as this was the place that is more affected.
§ The person has been in contact with ill persons from affected areas seven days prior to the onset of their illness. This is because the symptoms are usually visible at least seven days after the exposure to the condition.

Once swine flu is suspected respiratory swab testing should be done. This helps in diagnosing the condition.

Management of infected cases:

General:

§ Separation of the case from others in a single room until symptoms free. Even suspected people should be quarantined. This will help to prevent the spread.
§ Follow respiratory hygiene.

Antiviral treatment:

Taking Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) 75 mg twice daily for 5 days can make the illness milder and recovery faster. It could also prevent serious complications. It is best started within two days of onset of symptoms.

Vaccine: There is no vaccine currently available. Since it is a virus recently identified, there has been little time for the scientists to get a vaccine ready.
